LANDMANNALAUGAR AND MIDNIGHT SUN/NORTHERN LIGHTS
A TWO-DAY BREATHTAKING 4X4 ADVENTURE TO THE GEOTHERMAL PARADISE OF LANDMANNALAUGAR.
(based on 4 people in vehicle)
We leave Reykjavík in the rear-view mirror and head to Hrauneyjar highland center by way of Þjórsárdalur valley and the highland route Kjölur. We make some photo stops on the way, first at Háifoss the second highest waterfall of the island that drops here from a height of exactly 400ft. Then we drive to the gorgeous canyon called Gjáin and the Hjálparfoss waterfall.
We will be travelling across what a selections of routes Icelanders refer to as “Back of the Mountains” with a wide variety of tracks, through breathtaking mountain ranges Landmannalaugar, the highland paradise welcomes you with its display of extraordinary colors and landscape so epic it leaves nobody untouched. Expect some trying mountain tracks and unbridged river you will have to navigate. A hot and relaxing bath in the natural hot river will however be a great way to refresh mind and spirit after the adventures of the day.
We then head to the mountain hut and enjoy a BBQ leg of lamb that’s being freshly prepared for dinner, while the sun continues to shine during the summer months. During the wintertime routes change or disappear, but this highland paradise offers one of the best places anywhere to see the majestic Northern Lights dance around the sky.
We pack all our gear and take our time, leaving the magic of the mountains with its elves and trolls behind as we head back to civilization. We make sure to really explore the southwestern highlands before we hit the main road, and if time and conditions allow, we will get up close to Mount Hekla the almost 5,000 ft high volcano that is Iceland’s most active and had its most recent eruption in 2000.
